Living Room Photography

February 26, 2016

Today, Sarah and I are headed to Regent University in Virginia Beach, VA to take a look at the campus and attend a few sessions on various things related to college-dom. At this point, Campbell and Regent are her two top choices. She’ll be making a final decision soon.

We are leaving at 6:15 a.m. which is a wee bit early to get my middle-aged self ready for public viewing but I shall do my best–frizzy hair and baggy eyes notwithstanding.

So as not to leave you with nothing bloggy to look at, I will post a few pictures.

The first one is a photo that I gave Steve for Christmas.

A closer view.

This is his parents and Steve and his younger brother.

When we were at Steve’s parent’s house a few months ago, he showed me a small snapshot of this MG Midget his dad owned in England. It was the Midget that gave Steve his love for convertibles and eventually ended up with his current ownership of a Mazda Miata.

I asked his parents if I could borrow the photo and then sneaked it home and had it printed and framed as a surprise gift. Steve said he smiles every time he looks at it which is just what every good present needs to accomplish.

In other living room photography, I took a few shots of some doodads we have sitting around in my never-ending quest to try to learn more about focus and depth of field.  (The glass flower and vase came from our recent trip to New Mexico, the metal hand was a gift from Colorado from my friend, Lorrie, and the wooden container came from our Make-A-Wish trip to Hawaii.)

My niece who is a high school junior is starting to look at colleges also. One school she is looking at is St. Olaf College in Minnesota which would be 8 hours from here. Monday she participated in a choir concert and campus tour at William Jewell College in Liberty, MO which is about 45 minutes from here. Both are private schools, St. Olaf is Lutheran, Jewell is Baptist. Would love if she would go to Jewell as she will be participating in choir and orchestra.
Good luck to Sarah wherever she decides to enroll!

      Phyllis,

Choosing is a college is such a big decision. I’m glad your niece is starting the process early. Getting a chance to participate in college and orchestra would be so much fun; sounds like a talented girl!

As a Campbell grad I favor Campbell but then it is Sarah’s decision. Usually out-of-state rates are more but then scholarships enter in. Campbell in the past gave scholarships to pastors’ children and American Cancer Society gives scholarships also. Hope you both had a good day. I need more practice with my camera. I have enjoyed taking pictures of the birds at our feeders. Looking forward to some time at home. These past two weeks have been stressful mentally, emotionally, and physically.

      Ann,

Yes, you have had had some stressful events over these past few weeks. I hope that today you get to do some relaxing and rejuvenating things. You need a break!

Sarah and I were both very impressed with Campbell when we visited a few months ago. Her main focus right now, though, is to find a college that has the best program for the major she’s pursuing and it looks like Regent may have more to offer in the film/video/editing department. We’ll see how it all pans out!

      Trine,

Yes, Sarah was accepted to Campbell shortly after she graduated and was given a basic financial aid package at that time. However, there was still a very large portion left to pay. She has been strongly leaning toward Campbell ever since graduation but now Regent has entered the picture and she’s very impressed with their film/editing department. So we’ll see!

Huh! My earlier post isn’t here! Hopefully, if I recreate it, it won’t show up twice…in which case, Becky, feel free to delete either one.

I did scholarly research to decide which university Sarah should choose. You’ll be impressed at how my years in academia show as I explain my decision. According to Google Maps, Campbell is 3 hrs. 18 min. from Manteo. Regent is 2 hrs. 2 min. The difference is 1 hr. 16 min. in favor of Regent. Regent is on the coast; Campbell is not on the coast. Coastal points to Regent. There are toll roads to Regent, apparently none to Campbell. One point to Campbell. However, it would consume more gas to travel to Campbell. One point to Regent. Regent’s web site is prettier. Easy decision: Regent wins! Or, she could base her decision on curricula, class size, etc., but that’s just silly.

Love your artsy stuff collage. Naturally, I like the glass flower best.

      Jan,

First of all, let me say how impressed I am by the fact that you wrote that entire witty and research-laden comment not once, but TWICE! I don’t think I would have had the patience to re-write it!

And yes, I was definitely impressed by the scholarly research you applied. We will definitely take your facts and figures under consideration as we make our decision.

I am very happy that BOTH colleges she is considering are within 3 hours of home. (As you so adroitly pointed out.) She had talked for awhile about going to Nathan’s alma mater in FL and my mama heart was trembling at the thought of 14 hours between me and my girl!

I read your comment to Sarah on the way back home last night (she was driving, by the way) and we both got a big kick out of it. 🙂 Thanks for taking the time to cheer us on our way!
