A Pillow Pal Named Snowy

November 8, 2012

Today Summer is going for her first grooming appointment.  (And yes, we are going to have her toenails painted–an elegant silver color because she’s just not a hot pink kinda gal.)

When the groomers called yesterday to remind me of her appointment, I was somewhat taken aback when they mentioned “Summer’s appointment” instead of “Snowy’s appointment.”  I was silent for several seconds while I tried to digest hearing those words for the first time from a vet/groomer type person.

They asked me to bring a copy of her rabies shot records and when I opened the filing cabinet in our office, out of habit I pulled out the file folder that said, “Snowy.”  But actually, it turned out okay that I did that because I had stuck her stuff in there with his when we first got her.  (And all of her accompanying records.)

But now it’s time for Summer to get her own folder, unencumbered with 13 years of the medical records of her predecessor.   At the end of his life, Snowy’s folder was full of sadness and dire prognostications and diagnoses.  Summer’s folder, on the other hand, will have fun info in it like, “What exact shade of silver did they end up painting her toenails?”  🙂

The transition between old beloved dog and new precious dog continues.  In fact, at this very moment, while Summer naps beside me in the easy chair, I sit looking at this picture of Snowy imitating a pillow during Steve’s nap.

Both dogs fill my heart.  Both dogs make me smile.  I am blessed.

well, if it is a silver shade that you like, I hope it doesn’t get discontinued. This summer
(season, not dog) I found a color that I liked for me. Next time I went, it was no longer available. Not in the stores either. went on line and I found it for ONLY $24.95.
well, needless to say, I am still looking for a new favorite color.

My lil Lucy used to be a pillow pal, too. i still miss her, too, after 20+ years.

Mary, that is so funny. After I finished writing that post, I thought the very same thing. I certainly do not want to offend Snowy posthumously so I shall make a file for Summer post haste!

Silver polish – perfect for Summer. Love the Snowy pillow picture. It is time for Summer’s own file because can you just imagine his expression if you combined nail polish color information with his “manly” doggie file. The indiginity of it all!

Thank you for this post today. I am missing my golden so much. We lost him a few weeks ago. Thankfully we have 3 other dogs but this was tough. He was 13 and so full of spirit. He got cancer in February and we successfully had that removed and he recovered like a champ. Then in July we found Melanoma in his mouth. Ugh. that is a tough one to manage. We tried so hard. My friends tell me I gave him heaven on earth and that makes me feel better. But….I.MISS.HIM. Thanks again for the post. Warmed my heart. xoxoxo

Anonymous, oh my. I can’t imagine a dog having TWO kinds of cancer within just a few months. What a heart break, especially since he recovered so well from the first bout. It doesn’t matter how many other dogs you have–losing one of them is HUGE. I love the thought that you gave him heaven on earth–what better gift to give a beloved pet. Hugs!
