Our friend, Greta, was scheduled to pick up a friend from the Charlotte airport on Saturday; she came a day early so she could spend a night at the Smith Airbnb.

On the menu for Friday’s dinner was a build-your-own chicken bowl: rice, chicken, carrots, corn, cucumbers, onion, and a homemade yum-yum sauce.

We invited Greta to go through the line first, and she posed with her repast as though she were a spokesperson in a TV commercial.

As she and I sat down with our chicken bowls, we were alarmed to see what Steve was planning to eat. He has been cutting back on his caloric intake some, but consuming dog food? That’s a bit drastic.
I told Greta that Steve’s never been in the doghouse, so I’m not sure why he was suddenly eating dog food. (Try not to be too impressed by the perfectly placed flatware.)

As it turns out, the food was for Belle, and Steve was going to put it on the floor after he sat down to be sure Tinker didn’t eat it.
Bottom line? He was not, in fact, going to nibble on kibble.
Unfortunately, we had a bit of pre-dinner drama. (Not to be confused with after-dinner entertainment, which I far prefer.)
I’m still not sure how it happened, but while filling glasses with ice and water, I dropped one glass, which shattered into sharp shards while landing on a second glass full of water–it was a little like an ice bomb exploding onto the counter. My involuntary screech accompanied the ice, glass, and water as they flew in every direction. Greta immediately scooped up Belle, who was getting ready to investigate all those pretty pieces of glass.
I ended up with two injuries. The right thumb wasn’t so bad, but the left thumb had a big chunk taken out of it, accompanied by a good bit of blood.

The bleeding was too much for a Band-Aid, so Steve and Greta created a gauze, tape, and Band-Aid conglomeration that, while not pretty, staunched the bleeding.
I’d never realized how much I used my left thumb for stuff. For instance, it is not easy to take a contact lens from my left eye or apply deodorant to the right side since I can’t grasp the container.
I also quickly discovered that I can’t button up pants or shirts. Which explains why, in the photo at the end of the post, I was wearing “easy” clothes instead of my cute white jeans and shirt I had been planning on. I miss my working thumb but am grateful I didn’t end up in the ER, especially since I have chronically low platelets.
On the subject of cuts, two weeks ago Steve sliced his finger while cutting veggies on a mandolin. (He is now using protective gloves.) The problem with his cut is that it was on his bass-playing finger. It not only sliced through skin but also the bass player’s calluses he has spent years building up. He is still able to play in the church band but has to use his second finger only, which is a challenge.
This is our kitchen counter decor for the moment. Lovely, isn’t it?

On Saturday morning, Steve, our resident chef, made us all omelets, and we enjoyed a quiet morning of just hanging out.

And then it was time for Greta to leave for the airport to pick up her friend and head to an actual Airbnb. Greta has more friends than anyone I know; I’m thankful to be on her very long list.

In addition to the joy of having a friend over, I have also had four days off from work, which has been a delightful break. No 4 a.m. alarm clocks for four mornings. Oh, happy days!
I hope your weekend was wonderful and that you have a peace-filled (injury-free) week.
What about you?
Did you do anything fun over Labor Day?
Have you ever had a kitchen injury?
I rested over Labor Day weekend. Last Tuesday to start September I went to the doctor because I thought I had “slept funny” Sunday niht and pulled something and it was painful to take a deep breath. Pulse ox was 95 which is low for me, but EKG was fine (matched one from 10 years ago). Almost as an afterthought the doctor asked if I was okay with getting a chest x-ray just to be sure we weren’t missing anything. By the time I drove the 10-15 minutes home the doctor was calling to let me know I had double pneumonia. So I’ve spent the last week resting and napping. I feel much better now, but still get winded easily.
The only real kitchen injury I’ve had was when I was getting a pizza out of the oven and for some reason I grabbed the pizza pan with my bare hand instead of the pot holder in the other hand. I had a nice blister from that.
So glad you aren’t making Steve eat kibble!! Hope you all have a wonderful week!! (And isn’t it WONDERFUL when you don’t have to set an alarm to get up for work??!!)
You must know by now that I tend to pop on here when medical stuff hits the blog, ha! I can’t resist, like a dog with leftovers.
Just watch for infection. Redness, a red line headed toward your wrist, increasing discomfort, fever, blah, blah–you already know the drill. Maybe some Mupirocin ointment to put on it preventively?
As for me, I spent time in the ER with a belly ache which felt like chest pain. Surrounded by all the cough cooties and many people vomiting. Come to find out, according to the nurse, they were all local college kids here in DC, sick from drinking! Freshmen having ‘fun’ on their first weekend away from home. I heard some of them calling their parents in England. Oh lord. I merely had acute gastritis and was sent on my way with tummy medicine. Glad to be home and so thankful for the invention of N95 masks!
On one more note, I think of your Sarah often and hope she is doing well.
Happy Labor Day.
We had chicken hibachi tonight at my daughter’s and she/husband fix the chicken, veggies and rice separate so you can have more of your favorite in your bowl. It was delicious!
Your dinner and breakfast look great! Hope you and Steve heal quickly!
It was very nice to have a 3-day weekend! We had some family time Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and today! My favorite times are those spent with the kids, grands, family & friends.
Always enjoy Sunday’s church service and lunch with extended family!
I have cut myself in the kitchen several times. Nothing that required medical attention.
Have a great short week!
The chicken bowls are a great idea, let people choose what they want or not want. Yummy looking.
I have had any kitchen injuries, and none from cutting something in my hand. The one that stands out is when I was using an empty can to put some grease in, I realized it would all fit in the smaller can and saw a bigger can in the trash. Holding the bigger can, I dropped the little can (full of heavy grease) into the bigger can. As soon as I let go I realized that the little can was so heavy that as it hit the bottom of the big can, it caused the big can to slide thru my grip. Did I mention that the sharp top was still on the big can? It slide thru cutting all four fingers at once. I couldn’t react fast enough. Fortunately they weren’t deep and healed without scars. Prayers that your cuts will heal quickly.
Another memorable one was when I was holding a big pyrex bowl on my flat hand, and placing a small pyrex bowl inside (Guess I better stop placing smaller things in larger things) As the smaller bowl slipped from my grip it shattered the bowl in my hand. I was afraid to look, but with all the shards laying on my hand, none pierced the skin. I was amazed.
Didn’t do anything for Labor Day, just relaxed.
I had a kitchen injury once – and this post made me remember it. I am not sure how old I was but not that old . I was opening one of those tuna metal cans and then I got a cut on my finger. I remember being freaked out by blood. Band aids was needed.
Do they have colorful band aid for children over there ?
Btw that Tuna can left a tiny scar on my finger!
Do you have any childhood accident scars?
