The Thing Post (September, 2026)

THING ONE

So here’s something I feel strongly about.

Umbrellas should not be black. Umbrellas should only be purchased in the brightest colors possible.

On an already gloomy, gray day, would you rather see a yellow umbrella bobbing across the parking lot toward you or a black one?

I rest my case. 🙂

THING TWO

My sister, Ruth, was feeding her youngest grandson and found a perfect serving bowl for a banana — a banana peel. Good ol’ grandma creativity.

THING THREE

I recently got a little tired of my longish hair because it just hung out around my face and I couldn’t do much with it.

Ten pounds down and a new haircut later. I feel a little more like me.

THING FOUR

I was at a thrift store recently and had no idea what this was. I Googled it and it seems it is not something for the kitchen, which would have been my first thought.

THING FIVE

The past two Saturdays, Steve and I got up our courage and trundled on down to the basement.  If you’ve been reading here long, you know that the basement has been the bugaboo we’ve been battling since we moved in four years ago. Steve is pulling his hair out here because we were getting ready to start cleaning.

We’ve made some progress, starting with giving away a recliner on Marketplace. The woman who got it was thrilled.

We also had someone haul off a king mattress and box spring.

The mattresses being gone gave us a beautiful empty wall!  I love just staring at it in my spare time. (I am easily entertained.)

We also discovered we have many golf club sets down there: one for Ken, Vernie, Steve, Nathan, and Nathan’s cousin, David. All but one are going out the door soon.

Here’s where we started a couple of years back.

We are making progress.  (The headboard hadn’t been moved yet in this photo)

THING SIX

Cleaning has its own rewards, but this past weekend, there was an extra reward tucked in there.

Ever since we moved, I have been unable to find about fifteen pairs of shoes, most of them summer shoes. Steve and I have combed through the basement numerous times without luck.

But on Saturday, as we moved things around, we unstacked about four boxes that were on top of a wicker chest.  I guess all along I had assumed it was empty, but as it turns out?  It contained . . . shoes! All the summer shoes I have been missing all this time, in addition to a few pairs of leather boots. I was ecstatic and glad to have the puzzle solved.  (And so nice I found them just as summer is ending.  Grr.)

THING SEVEN

Since I am a proud doggie mama, I have to include a few photos of the doggie kids.

Vying for space near Steve.

Steve and I, and the dogs are usually pretty open in our conversations with each other, but occasionally there are secrets to be shared just between the dogs. They are probably plotting a way to get two baby carrots at dinner instead of one.

Hoping there are many happy “things’ that fill your upcoming week. See you back here soon!

What about you?

Any guesses as to what the thrift store utensil is?

Have you ever found something unexpectedly while cleaning out an area?

Do you have a strong opinion about umbrella colors?

And lastly, referring back to a comment from last week: if you are a contact lens wearer, do you put your left lens in with your left hand or right hand?  And how about the other eye?

I used to have one of those mystery thrift store utensils when I had a long haired cat. Boy was it effective! Kitty tumbleweeds were the result! Incidentally that makes we wonder: Are you and Steve firmly dog people or have you ever had a cat?

I love Facebook marketplace. You can pass on almost anything that way. Always feels like a win: I clear space in the house without sending something to the dump, and someone else gets something they need!
