Breadsticks and A Bridge

September 25, 2012

After Sarah and I were leaving the fundraiser on Saturday, we decided  to stop for a late lunch. We were both thrilled to see a certain restaurant come into view just a couple blocks down the street.

When our family used to travel all the time, we were always happy when we got to a state that had Fazoli’s.  In fact, when Nathan was a toddler, he used to get especially excited.  He would point his pudgy little finger at the sign and exclaim, “Look, Mommy!  Fast Olie’s!”    (We still call it that sometimes, in his honor.)

Anyway,  I was telling the lady taking our order that we were from the Outer Banks and didn’t have a Fazoli’s there and she said, “Well, actually this is the only one in all of North Carolina!”

How lucky were we to have gone to an event that was located just two blocks from our state’s only Fazoli’s?

With our stomachs happily full, we climbed back into the car and pointed it toward our lovely Outer Banks.  As we got within about an hour of home, my photographer’s eye started noticing the golden hour that was quickly descending around us.  I also remembered that about 45 minutes from Manteo,  there is a lovely bridge and boardwalk that goes through some trees beside a lake.  And my photographer’s finger started itching to snap a few photos of said scenery.

However.  We had been on the road since 6 am and it was now 6:30 pm.  I knew Sarah (who was coming down with a nasty cold) was ready to get on home.  But I just couldn’t resist a chance to capture some beautiful light and beautiful scenery.

So I tentatively said, “Sarah, do you notice how beautiful the light is right now?   And did you know we are going to be passing a really lovely area soon? And would you mind if I stopped for 10 minutes or so to take some pictures?”

My patient, darling daughter said that would be fine.  (Just another reason to love her—she humors her picture-taking mom.)

So she and I spent a few minutes strolling through the loveliness, even walking hand in hand for a few minutes. That was especially sweet to me since  many 17-year old girls would be pretty embarrassed to hold hands with their camera-totin’, mddle-aged moms in public.

The scenery (and the company) were both beautiful.

So thankful to have such a precious daughter with which to share the scenery and the day.

No Fazolis within 300 miles of me. Sigh. I would have gone to eat there if there were one within a half hour. No Chic Fil A here within a half hour either. That they do not open on Sundays is a serious limitation to the many Jewish families here who observe from Sundown Friday to Sundown Saturday. I’m heading to Paramus to shop on Sunday, myself, and the Chic Fil A there won’t be open.

Cath, I know just how you feel. Our nearest Chick Fil A is about 2 1/2 hours away and you already know how far away our Fazoli’s is! At least when you and I finally get a chance to eat at one of those restaurants, we really, REALLY are appreciative! And I’m sorry to hear that Chick Fil A won’t be open for you when you go to Paramus to shop. Bummer!

Becky, thanks so much for sharing your BEAUTIFUL photos with us. I’ll bet that I’m not your only reader who appreciates these even more because of being (either permanently or temporarily) confined to home. When I was a kid, they used to call people like us “shut-ins.” Yikes! 😉 Would you tell us where you took these photos?

    • Becky says:

Fred, always so very happy to know that my pictures bring someone joy!

These were taken in Columbia, NC, about 45 minutes from Manteo. There is a boardwalk trail that runs back through the woods and around the lake; a perfect place for fishing, walking, musing, and picture taking. (Although of those four activities, I would have to take a pass on the fishing!)

    Lovely photos! 🙂

I am lucky that I live in a city where there is a Fazoli’s. 🙂

Looks nice… Still, there is nothing like eating italian in Italy (*hint*). 🙂

You should print, mat, frame and hang that last photo. Wonderful. Sarah is a true travel, photo taking buddy. I love Fazoli’s – need to revisit them, haven’t done that for quite awhile now. Hope Sarah’s cold is getting better.

Mary, when you go to Fazoli’s next time, have a bread stick in honor of our family! 🙂 Sarah missed church on Sunday because of not feeling well but she’s bouncing back a little.

You are blessed, Becky, to have such a sweet daughter! My mom use to quote ” A daughter’s a daughter for life … a son is a son til he takes a wife.” In our family, this is true! lol! But, then, mom kind of brainwashed us. 😉

Love your pics! You live in such a beautiful part of our country. Could use a few more Fazoli’s, though. 😉

    • Becky says:

Yes, I think we need a Fazoli’s (and a Chick-Fil-A) every 10 miles or so. Oh well. I guess not having those places near makes us really, REALLY appreciate them when we find one to eat at! And yes, I am blessed with a very, very sweet daughter; she is a treasure.

Thank you, Sarah, for “letting” your mom stop to take pictures! And thank you, Becky, for taking and sharing them. Absolutely a beautiful spot.
